Abstract

The reproductive toxicity and fertility regulating actions of Dioscores hispide Dennst, on make laboratory rats were evaluated. The test material was introduced to the animals by gavage technique at varying sublethal concentrations (i. e. below the established LD50 value) at a constant volume of 5mg/kg bw. Dioscores hispida crude extract was found to cause severe poisoning to rats given the high dose. A 100% mortality was observed at high level of treatments. It was also observed that the crude extract caused a significant decrease in sperm motility and a higher percentage of abnormal sperm. However, the test material had no apparent effects on sperm counts, body and organ weights. Histopathological observation of the surviving rats showed a marked interstitial fluid accumulation and thickening of the interstitial cells.
