Abstract

The gross morphological and histological effects of different concentrations of aqueous pansit pansitan (Eaperumia pellucIda (L_) HBK) plant extract on the internal organs of two month old female white mice (Mos musculus Balb/C) were studied. These treatments: distilled water, 10% plant extract and 20% plant extract in distilled water were administered by gavage method at 0.25 ml/day for a period of six weeks. There were no morphological abnormalities seen in the kidney, heart, spleen, adrenal glands, ovary, small and large intestines of the treated mice_ However, the livers had a softer consistency and paler appearance than normal. It was also observed that the livers and the kidneys of the mice given the plant extracts had congestion, cloudy swellings, fatty degeneration, hemorrhage, and loss of boundaries between the neighboring cells_ The extract also caused significant effects in the heart (congestion, edema, fatty degeneration, hemorrhage and necrosis), spleen (congestion, hypersplenism, and loss of boundaries between lymph nodules and neighboring parts), adrenal glands (fat cell formations), and large intestine (increased goblets cells, slough-off mucosa, pyknosis and necrosis). From the results, the plant can be a cholalogue and a possible cure for ulcers anddiarrhea. It appears that the 10% and 20% pansit-pansitan plant extract given for a period of six weeks to two month old female white mice are likely to affect the gross morphological and histological characteristics of some internal organs.
