Abstract
Mucon hiemaliz NRRL 3624 was subjected to chemical mutagenesis with 1%, 3% and 5% ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) for 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Mutagenesis yielded 115 isolates of which 16 exhibited comparable to or higher degrees of yellow color than the control strains. Ten mutant isolates showed higher beta-carotene content (3.60 to 5.52 mg/g) than the control (2.83 to 3.48 mg/g) or an increase ranging from 3% to 59%.
