Abstract
Morphological characteristics, chromosome number, chromosome behavior in Meiosis I and Meiosis II, and stem epidermal patterns were determined in three Philippine Saccharzim officinarum L. accessions namely: PHIL64-21, VMC83-653, and VMC81-21A. Morphological data gathered from the three accessions showed 33.96% similarity and 15.09% difference between the accessions. The most notable differences include tillering density, leaf blade length and width, outer and inner auricle shape, internode shape, bud shape, and bud length and width. PHIL64-2l and VMC68-653 had greater similarities (58.49%) compared to VMC81-21A and VMC83-653 (45.28%), and to PHIL64-21 and VMC81-21A (43.40%). At diakinesis, bivalents and univalents were observed. Chromosome number ranged from 2n=88-106 in PHIL64-21, 2n=82-110 in VMC83-653, and 2n=80-104 in VMC8I-21A. Chromosome number with the highest frequency was 2n=104 (22%) in PHIL64-21, 2n--')0 (16%) in VMC83-653, and 2n=90 (18%) in VMC81-21A. Frequencies of cells with abnormalities were low. Triple poles were observed in 2% of the cells at Metaphase I in PHIL64-21 and 2% of the cells in Metaphase I in VMC83-653. Laggards were observed in 10% of the cells in Anaphase I in PH1L64-21. Laggards were also observed in 6% of the Anaphase II in VMC81-21A. Although each of the hybrids showed distinct stem epidermal patterns, they can all be classified under type V epidermis which has 0-20% of paired cork-silica cells.
