Abstract

Seed weight is a criterion of seed quality in rice which Influence seed and seedling vigor. the apical two centimeters of seedling roots sampled from ten rice coltivars, grown with varying grains of I ow, medium, heavy weights were used to determine the relationship of some root apical characteristics to seed weight. Data, showed that the meristematic and root cap length tend to be inversely proportional to grain weight. Mitotic index did not vary among the weight levels. Differentiation occurred earlier the heavy grains, as indicated by the shorter distance from the distal end of the meristem to the first root hair and xylem element. The observations did not, however, differ significantly between levels of grain weight but significant effects were obtained among cultivar. It appears for the results above that characterization of the root apex could not be used as a criterion in selecting seed weight to produce seed or seedling vigor. Never the less, results of the present study clearly show the varietal differences in root apical characteristics, afinding which likely contribute to the possible significance of these parameters to genotyphic traits in rice.
