Abstract

he chromosome numbers and morphology of milkfish (Chanos chanos) obtained from Malabon fishponds were studied. Chromosomes were counted from the caudal fin borders. The study revealed that the diploid chromosome number of C. chanos from the Philippines was 32 which is numerically similar to the chromosome number of the species from Taiwan. The fundamental number (NP) was 52. The chromosome formula based on the centromeric index and arm ratio was 2 pairs of submedian chromosomes, 8 pairs of median chromosome s and 6 pairs of telocentric chromosomes. Taiwan population on the other hand had 2 pairs submedian, 7 pairs median and 7 pairs telocentric s. It is therefore concluded that the Philippine and Taiwan populations are chromosomally different.
