Abstract
The modified centrifuge technique for lepidop teran chromosomes by Bigger (1975) and sue spot-plate technique by Barrion and Anialin (1988) were employed to determine the Karyotype and the mitotic stages of the 24-hour fertilized eggs of the rice leaffolder, Harasmia patnalis Bradley. The diploid chromosome number i2n) of M. pdzi:e11.5 ranged from 7 to 75 with a mode of 28, utilized for karyotyping. The wide range in chromosome number was attributed to the presence of supernumerary chromosomes and to the fusion and fragmentation of the chromosomes. The holokinetic and irregularly-shaped chromosomes have an average actual area ranging from 0.10 1- 0.03 cm2 to 0.90 0.29 cm2 and with a relative area of 0.010 and 0.086, respectively. Mito tic index was 42.682. There were five prophase substages based on features of differentiating nuclei. Chromosome clumping was evident from the premetaphase stage. About 7.6Y. of the cells were binucleated suggesting probable delayed cytokinesis at telophase.
