Abstract

Majority of the Philippine mammalian fauna belongs to Order Chiroptera. However, despite a great abundance of bats, they are among the least studied groups of mammals in the country. Very little is known about the diversity of bats from Batanes Islands, despite being designated as a Protected Landscape and Seascape. A comparison of the diversity of bat species found in the Batanes Islands, northern Philippines was conducted in May- June 2007. Standard sampling was done in remnant patches of secondary forests in each of the four larger islands in the Batanes group. including Batan, Sabtang, Itbayat, and Ivojos. Bats were sampled using mist- nets, tunnel traps and cave inspections, as well as ethno-biological interviews of local people about known bat roosts. Species diversity, endemism, and similarity were compared from among the four selected study sites. A total of 4 species which comprised of two insect bats and two fruit bats were recorded in the Batanes Islands. Most interesting observations are possible new records of bats for Sabtang, ltbayat, and Ivojos islands, including the rare Pteropus dasymallus, and widespread Miniopterus ausiralis and Rhinolophus virgo.
