Abstract

The chromosome number, morphology and behavior at meiosis and mitosis of maiden's jealousy, Tristellateiaaustraliuswe A. Rich. were investigated. Chromosomes at pachytene stage and c-metaphase were analyzed, measured and presented in an idiogram and a karyotype, respectively. Acetocarmine squash preparations of Farmer's fixed flower buds of T austrultusiae A. Rich. showed normal meiosis. Diakinesis and pachytene analysis revealed that the haploid chromosome number of T ausiraliasiae A. Rich. was n=10. The idiogram showed that the average relative lengths of the chromosomes ranged from 0 140 to 0.192. Arm ratios were from 1.7 to 4.5. Chromosomes 1 to 5, 7, 9 and 10 were submetacentric while chromosomes 6 and 8 were metacentric and subtelocentric, respectively. Centromeric index ranged from 18.2 to 37.5. Normal mitotic cells from the shoot tips and young leaves were also observed. The karyotype established a diploid chromosome number of 2n-20, with chromosome lengths ranging from 1.07 to 2.85 cm. Pollen fertility was 96.37%.
