Abstract
Morphological diversity analysis of 417 accessions of the Solanum germplasm collection at AVRDC was performed using SAS Software Release 6.10. Outliers, or accessions with extreme values for the ratio scale traits were identified using PROC UNIVARIATE. Thirty six accessions with unique values for traits such as plant height, plant branching and number of locales per fruit were obtained. Groups of less correlated traits were identified using PROC VARCLUS. For groups of highly correlated traits, the trait with normal distribution was chosen to represent the group. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed on the remaining less correlated traits using PROC CLUSTER. Plots of three clustering statistics namely pseudo F, pseudo t2, and cubic clustering criterion were obtained using PROC PLOT. These three statistics indicated a common value of 6 clusters. The number of sub-clusters was set at 5% of the total number of accessions which was equivalent to 19 sub-clusters. The clusters were based on the similarities between the quantitative traits of each accession. The dendrogram which showed the groupings of closely related accessions was constructed using PROC TREE. Cluster analysis revealed most of the S. melongena accessions could be grouped into one cluster, indicating low variability for the ratio scale traits. The qualitative traits were used to nominate the accessions to a core collection which represents the maximum amount of diversity of a group using the least number of accessions.
