Abstract
A study was conducted to test whether Chichinca(Catharanthus roseus L ) crude leaf extract could induce cytological aberrations on human leukocytes cultured in vitro One percent, 3% and 5% weight by volume extract from Chichinca leaves were obtained and treated to cultured cells incubated at 37°C for 48 hours The cultured cells were exposed to the treatment for another 24 hours before harvested and cytologically observed Statistical analysis using repeated measure design and DMRT for tests with significant differences at 5% significance level were done The treatment could significantly reduce the number of dividing cells. Mitotic index decreased from 0.144% to 0.074%. An increase the number of cells with highly condensed chromosome configuration was observed(from 0 09% to 0.45%). The treatment did not significantly show differences to the tests on chromosomal gaps, breaks and premature separation of sister chromatids
