Abstract
Sodium butyrate is a salt form of short chain fatty acid, butyric acid that enhances villi growth and has a bactericidal effect. A 33-day feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of feeding different levels of sodium butyrate in the production performance of broilers. A total of four hundred (400) birds were used in the study. Four dietary treatments were randomly distributed to 20 cages following Completely Randomized Design (CRD). One hundred (100) birds were allocated per treatment and were further subdivided into five replicates with each replicate having 20 birds. Broilers in control group were fed with commercial starter, grower and finisher diets while those in treatments 2, 3 and 4 were fed with commercial starter, grower and finisher diets with sodium butyrate (SB) at 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 g/kg, respectively. No significant difference (p>0.05) was observed in the feed intake of birds during overall period of feeding trial. Significant difference (p0.05) was observed in the dressing percentage and livability of the broilers. There was an improvement in the income over feed and chick costs (IOFCC) with a feed cost efficiency of 41.78 upon the addition of sodium butyrate at level of 2g/kg. The study showed that sodium butyrate has a positive effect on growth rate and feed efficiency of broilers.
