Abstract
Populations of two fruitflies were sampled at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos campus. Morphological characterization of the male genitalia, maxillary palps and other lass stable traits identified them as Drosophila melanogaster •eigen and D. simulans Sturtevant. The former was dominantly sampled at the Biological Science and Animal Science compounds while the latter was frequent at the UPLB Hortorium. D. melanogaster possesses a hook-shaped process at the genital arch and has three stout bristles at the outer end of its maxillary palps. On the other hand, D. simulans had a hood-shaped process at the genital arch and has two stout bristles at the outer end of its maxillary pains. Using the lacto-aceto-orcein squash technique, the polytene chromosomes of the third instar larvae revealed some Familiarities and differences in the banding patterns. Me differences in the salivary gland chromosomes X, 2L ,nd 2R of the two species were located at their distal ends while in the chromosomes 3L and 3R, the variations were distributed randomly along the entire length of the chromosomes. Thus, in addition to varying morphological characters, D. melanogaster and D. simulans can be differentiated in terms of their polytene chromosomes.
