Abstract

This study was done to determine the genetic variability. of Fe and Zn loading in the rice grain, and determine if correlation exists between rnicronutrient density and number of days after anthesis and selected agronomic characters. Twelve varieties/lines of rice: 1R64, IR72, IR65600-27-1-2-2, I R68537-23-1-5-1, CT9993-5-10-1-M, 1R62266-42-6-2, Azucena, 1R68144-2B-2-2-3, IR36, Zuchein, Jalmagna, and Xua Bue Nuo were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in RCBD at the IRR1 farm during the dry season of 2002. Variation in grain Fe and Zn, which was analyzed by ANOVA, was significant. The varieties with consistent high grain iron were Zuchein, Xua Bue Nuo, and IR68537. Thus, these varieties have efficient Fe loading. Contrastingly, IR breeding lines 1R64, TR72 and IR62266 had consistent low grain iron content. Varieties with consistent high grain zinc were Zuchein, CT9993 and IR68537. Thus, these varieties have efficient Zn loading. Same IR breeding lines have low zinc content. Correlation between grain Fe filling at different days after anthesis showed that selection for high grain Fe can start as early as 6 days after anthesis. On the other hand, with zinc, selection for high grain Zn is possible at 6 days but is more reasonable to start at day 12. Correlation analysis showed that high iron and high zinc have a very strong positive association. Selection and breeding for high iron would also select high zinc varieties and vice versa Correlation was also done with agronomic characters such as leaf width, tiller number and days to flower with grain iron and zinc. A weak association of these agronomic characters to grain iron and zinc were observed. Thus, the agronomic characters are not good traits for selecting high grain iron and zinc density in rice
