Abstract

Acetocarmine squash preparations of Farmer's fixed flower buds of Abiu, Pouteria caimito (Ruiz and Pavon) Radlk. from the National Plant Genetics Research Laboratory at the Institute of Plant Breeding were studied. Chromosome number, meiotic behavior and pollen fertility of P. caimito were determined. The chromosome number was found to be n=11 for most of the cells observed at diakinesis. Also, most of the meiotic cells were normal and followed the regular sequence of stages. Abnormalities were very minimal; laggards were only found in the first meiotic division and none in the second meiotic division. The pollen fertility of P. caimito was 98.36%
