Abstract

Meiotic and karyotypic features of the spermatogenetic cells of the marble angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare Heckel were revealed by the Farmer's-fixed and acetocarmine-lacto-aceto-orcein macerated testes. More interphase or non-dividing cells (73.3) than dividing cells or meiocytes (26.7) was observed. Majority of the cells observed were undergoing reductional division or Meiosis I stages particularly Prophase I substages (60%). the mean meiotic index of P. scalare was 16.7%. The haploid chromosome number was n=24. As shown by the idiogram, the relative lengths of the pachytene chromosomes ranged from 0.012 to 0.152. the testicular meiocytes exhibit thesmallest (0.012) heterochromatic X-chromosome suggesting that the male P. scalare is homogametic (XX) while the female is heterogametic (XY). The karyotype of the male P. scalare is 2n=48 (23 IIA = XX).
