Abstract

ABSTRACT PAULO RUFINO P. ESTIOKO, University of the Philippines at Los Banos. March, 1995. "CYTOLOGICAL COMPARISON OF GREEN LEAFHOPPER, Nephotettix virescens [Distant] (HOMOPTERA:• CICADELLIDAE) SAMPLED FROM NEGROS OCCIDENTAL AND PANAY ISLANDS." An undergraduate thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology, major in Cell Biology. Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences. ADVISER: Dr. Adelina A. Barrion Four populations of the green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens (Distant), sampled from Negros Occidental (Taloc and San Enrique municipalities) and Panay islands (Leganes and Dumangas municipalities) were cytologically examined and compared. Meiotic indices of all the populations were insignificantly different. Chromosome number of the populations was constant at 2n = 15 (711A + X0 [males], XX [females]). However, chromosomal variations in relative mean lengths were exhibited by autosomes 1, 3, and 4 during diakinesis. Significant cellular, nuclear, and chromosomal variations were observed during the interphase and first meiotic stages (leptonema, zygonema, pachynema, and diakinesis).
