Abstract

ABSTRACT FLORENCE B. FORONDA, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, May, 1987. The Effect of Nitrogen on the Doubling Time, Heterocyst Index, and Sporulation of Azolla Spp. Adviser: Dr. Pacifico C. Payawal The effect of combined nitrogen on the doubling time, heterocyst index, and sporocarp formation of Azolla caroliniana Billdenow, Azolla mexicana Presl, and Azolla pinnate R. Brown was studied. The strains were grown in Watanabe's culture solution. Ammonium nitrate having different nitrogen levels (0 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm, and 40 ppm) was introduced to the culture solution. The doubling time and the heterocyst indeces Were then determined after 7 days of culture. The Azolla plants were transferred to a low-high temperature chamber for one month for sorocarp formation. The study shored that the varying levels of nitrogen has a significant effect on the doubling time of Azolla at 5 probability level. Nitrogen has also a significant effect on the heterocyst indeces of the strains, the Azolla grown in nitrogen free solution having the highest heterocyst index and those grown in solution with 40 ppm nitrogen having the lowest heterocyst index. No sporocarp formation was observed at temperature tanging from 17-21oC using the same nitrogen levels.
