Abstract
GARCIA, NELSON SARMIENTO. 2003. Morphological and Cytological Studies of Three Sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) Hybrids From Hawaii. University of the Philippines Los Banos. B.S. Biology major in Cell Biology. Major Adviser: Prof. Celia B. dela Vina ABSTRACT Morphological characteristics, stem epidermal patterns, chromosome number at Diakinesis, and chromosome behavior during meiosis, were determined in three Saccharum hybrids from Hawaii namely: H63-1933, H70-9385, and H70-9563. Morphological data showed variation in 34 out of 53 characteristics observed from the three Saccharum hybrids, the most notable of which were in the color of leaf blade, leaf sheath, dewlap, stalk, bud, and average length of the leaf blade. In terms of percent similarity, the greatest was between hybrids H70-9563 and 1170-9385 (62%), followed by hybrids 1-163-1933 and H70-9563 (55%), while the lowest was between H63-1933 and H70-9385 (45%). Although each of the three hybrids exhibited distinct stem epidermal patterns, they can all be classified under Type V epidermis which has 0-20% percentage of paired cork-silica cells. At Diakinesis, bivalents (II) and univalents (I) were observed: 4011 + 21 to 5211 in H63-1933, 4311 to 5911 + 41 in H70-9385, and 3311 to 5811 + 21 in 1170-9563. Chromosome number, therefore, ranged from 2n=82-104 in H63-1933, 2n=86-122 for H70-9385, and 211=66-118 for H70-9563. The most frequent counts were 5011 + 21 (2n=102) in H63-1933 (42%), 5011 (2n=100) in H70-9285 (28%) and 5611 + 4 I (2n=116) in 1170-9563 (20%). Frequencies of cells with abnormalities were low. Laggards were observed in 6% of cells at Telophase II in H63-1933, while triple pole formation and non-congression were shown in 6% and 2% of Metaphase I cells in H70-9385, respectively. No meiotic abnormalities were found in H70-9563.
