Aside from surveys, very few studies regarding bird species diversity in urban forests have been conducted in the Philippines. Hence, habitat characterization and bird diversity comparison in two seasons were done for two urban forests in Sta. Rosa, Laguna from March 2010 to early March 2011 to compare bird diversity spatially and temporally. Comparison of the two urban forests with a secondary, lowland tropical rainforest was also done to facilitate if there are differences in bird diversity. Habitat analysis was done through point center quarter method and physical identification of plant assemblages. Bird diversity was established through species and frequency counts. Despite differences in total number of species and species composition seasonally and spatially as well as community similarity indices across sites, results showed that there were no significant differences in bird diversity between seasons of same sites. Two-way ANOVA also showed that there is no significant difference between sites of the same season. Thus, the two urban forests along with the secondary, lowland, tropical rainforest found can be said as comparable to each other despite differences in habitat characteristics and bird species present. These observations also suggest that urban areas can harbor a high number of bird species despite anthropogenic activities (Vallejo et al. 2008). It is thus recommended that these habitats be preserved and maintained to conserve the diversity of bird species. Furthermore, replanting of native tree species are recommended to further recruit bird species.
