Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at Davao Susana Farms Incorporated in Talomo, Davao City from April 19 to May 29, 2010. The major practice was conducted to enable the student to put into practical application the theoretical knowledge learned in the university; to be acquainted about the different management practices in the farm; to be familiar about the common problems encountered in a swine farm; and to learn how to interact with the different people in the industry. Davao Susana Farms has 1,006 sow level in a farrow-to-finish operation. The farm is divided into four different sections which are the breeding, farrowing, nursery, and grower-finisher section. The student participated in all the activities and routines involved in the different sections of the farm such as feeding, cleaning of pens, heat detection of dry sows, artificial insemination, umbilical cord and needle teeth cutting, castration, ear tattooing, administration of vaccines and medications, and record keeping. Technical analysis, lessons learned, and recommendations were discussed in the written report in a form of a manuscript. A SWOT analysis was presented to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities. Recommendations were discussed to offer possible solutions to the problems encountered by the farm.
