Abstract
A modified atmosphere package (MAP) suitable for calamondin was optimized. The respiration rate was computed and was used to determine the package fill weight for a fixed film thickness, package area, respiration rate, number of pinholes and transmission rate. The number of pinholes was initially computed to be equal to one. The experiment showed that at the ambient temperature, 15°C and 23°C, the respiration rate of calamondin based on O₂ consumption are 19.7 mL/kf-hr,9.03 mL/kf-hr and 10.57 mL/kf-hr respectively. The O₂ and CO₂ levels were not close to the recommended level of 5%. However, there was no significant difference in the sensory analysis on stored calamondin compared to the control. The effects of using smaller perforations on package O₂ and CO₂ levels should be tried to bring gas levels closer to the optimum.
