Abstract

ABSTRACT GUERTA, DINO K. University of the Philippines at Los Banos. B. S. Biology. March 1993. Karyotype Analysis of Achuete, Bixa orellana. L. Bixales : Bixaceae )

Adviser Dr. Adelina A. Barrion

The chromosomes in the root tip cells of Achuete, Bixa orellana L. pre-treated with 0.01 % aqueous colchicine solution were studied using the acetocarmine squash technique. The active division process at the root tip cells of B. occured between 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. The mean m:totic index of the cell was 21.28 %. Karyotype analysis were made on photomicrographs of pre-metaphase cells. The somatic cells of B. orellana had diploid chromosome numbers of 14 and it, with a frequency of occurence of 75 % and 25 %, respectively. Based on their centromeric position, the chromosomes were assigned to two groups Group I, with median centromeres and Group II, with terminal centromeres. The relative mean length of the chromosomes ranged from 0.2132 to 0.0637.
