Abstract
Two species of family Compositae found in the Philippines, Vernonia cinema and Emilia sonchiflora, were analyzed on the basis of their chromosome number and meiotic behavior. Based on the observation at diakinesis and metaphase 1, V. cinerca was determined to have n=9. Due to the 100', bivalent formation and the absence of laggards and bridges at anaphase I and telophase I, it is concluded to be a diploid with normal meiotic behavior. Two cytotypes were spontaneously observed in Emilia sonchiflora, one being a diploid with n=5 and normal meiotic behavior at diakinesis, metaphase 1, anaphase I and telophase I. The second cytotype was observed to have diverse meiotic configurations during diakinesis wherein rings, chains, crosses and other quadrivalent forms were observed, the chains being the most prevalent. Trivalents, univalents and bivalents were also observed during diakincsis and metaphase I. At anaphase I and telophase I, bridges and laggards were also observed. The presence of quadrivalents suggests that this population is an autotetraploid.
