Abstract

The toxicity and biochemical effects of neem oil and azadirachtin on both sexes of the three species of rice pests. N. Lugens S. furcifera and N. virescens were determined through spectrophotometric monitoring of acetylcholinesterase, alpha and beta esterase activities

Results showed that with increasing concentrations of neem oil and azadirachtin there is an increasing percentage in mortality for both sexes in the three species studied. A relatively smaller percentage in mortality were observed among the females. There was a general decrease in the production of non-specific esterase with a higher level of activity among the females. Insects treated with neem oil was also noted to produce a higher level of non-specific esterase compared to those treated with azadirachtin. the same effect was noted in acetylinesterase except for N. lugens which was noted to increase.
