Abstract
ABSTRACT ROWENA AURORA R. IPSEN, University of the Philippines Los BaAos, April 1996. Frequency, Inheritance and Plasma Protein Analysis Among Filipino Asthmatics in Los Banos, Laguna.

The frequency of Filipino asthmatics residing in Los Banos showed a 1:200 ratio. From the 374 asthmatic individuals, 49.47% were male, and 50.53% were female. These observed frequencies show that there is no sexual difference in the number of individuals affected by asthma in Los Banos, Laguna. Females above the 14 years old show a higher frequency of asthma in contrast to the general trend that asthmatic males below 14 have a higher frequency in any population studies. Correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation coefficient (p = -0.261) between the number of asthma consults per month and pollen incidence in Los Banos. This indicates a non-linear correlation between the two. variables. At at = 0.05 this relationship was also found not to be significant, implying that the frequency of asthma consults is not due to the pollen incidence in Los Banos. Factors such as change of temperature due to heavy rainfall are considered to be the causal facor of the frequency of asthma consults in Los Banos, Laguna. Asthma is definitely familial as determined by the percentage familial occurrence (ave. of 37.11%). Pedigree analysis of 3 asthmatic Filipinos show an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance with variable expression of the gene. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Poly Acrylamide Gel Electrophoresis of asthmatic versus non-asthmatic plasma proteins showed a total of 60 protein bands with varying mobilities and frequencies in both. Significant differences in average Rf values were found for 18 of the 60 bands. The fastest moving band has an average Rf value of one, while the slowest moving band has an average Rf value of 0.01. The similarity index (S) for plasma protein bands of asthmatics and non-asthmatics was found to be 637.. Statistical analysis for the equality of variances revealed non-significant differences in the variability of the relative mobilities of the blood plasma proteins between asthmatics and non-asthmatics. Nonetheless, variations in the electrophoretic patterns of proteins indicates polymorphism in the games. Future studies concentrating on the significantly varying protein bands found in the asthmatics, could lead to the possible identification of a protein marker for asthma.
