Abstract

ABSTRACT ISON, MICHAEL JOMAR BANDIAN. College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines, Los Banos, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Major in Genetics, March, 1996. Frequency Distribution Inheritance Pattern and Protein Profile of Hypertension of Selected Families in Los Banos Laguna based on SDS-PAGE Adviser: Dr. Rita P. Laude

Eleven families were interviewed and their pedigrees, age, and sex of each member were obtained. Individuals were also sampled for plasma, and the plasma proteins were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Results showed that the sex ratio of hypertension in the Los Banos subjects is 1.62 male : 1 female, showing a higher predisposition in Filipino males to hypertension, and that hypertension is age-dependent in the Filipino context. Both were consistent with literature. The age bracket 40-60 yrs had the highest percentage of hypertensive, and the decrease in the number of hypertensives in the age bracket >60 yrs was attributed to death. Hypertension was also found to be multifactorial in inheritance. Statistical analysis of protein bands showed no significant differences between protein profile of normal and hypertensive subjects. However, Band 11 showed potential as a marker because of its relatively low frequency of appearance in hypertensives.
