Abstract
Jerusalem, Grace Lardizabal. 1997. University 01 the Philippines, Los Banos. CYTOGENETLCS OF THE MALE PROGENY OF NORMAL AND IRRADIATED CORN EARWORMS, Helicoverpa Armigera ( Hubner ) ( LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE). Adviser a In Adelina A. Barrion ABSTRACT Genetic control was initiated through 10 krad gamma irradiation of the male corn earworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner). Cytogenetic analyses of the normal male 6th instar larvae, revealed a chromosome number of 2n = 62 ( 30I1(1 XX ). Progeny of matings between normal females and normal male armigera possessed chromosomes which behaved normally at Meiosis I. On the other hand, the progeny of matings between normal females and irradiated males had meiotic chromosomes with abnormal configurations at diakinesis. Large heterozygous types of reciprocal translocation such as rings and chains were observed at high frequencies. These chromosomal aberrations could result to infertile gametes.
