Acetocarmine squash technique was employed to determine the chromosome number and meiotic behavior of the Philippine native orchid Ascocentrum minialum (Lindl.) Schltr. Cytological observations revealed a chromosome number of about 2n=38 to 2n=42. High frequency of chromosome abnormalities like non-congression at metaphase I (97.3%) and laggards at anaphase I (28.9%) were observed at Meiosis I. The same chromosome behaviors were exhibited in metaphase II (100%) and anaphase II (41.9%). The factor possibly contributing to the abnormal metaphase and anaphase stages were explained. However, telophase I and II were found to be normal. Pollinia fertility evaluated by starch-12K1 technique revealed 71% fertility.
