Abstract

Three accessions of Azolla pinnate originating from the Philippines, Viet Nam, and Indonesia were studied.

Determination and comparison of chromosome number and meiotic behavior were performed in Azolla pinnata 0001 and Azolla pinnate 0038. Results showed that the meiotic chromosomal behavior is normal. Chromosomes were observed to be extremely small and poorly spread, contributing to the difficulty in establishing chromosome number. However, in Azolla pinnate 0001, a high frequency of cells had a chromosome number 2n = 40, and in Azolla pinnate 0038, the most frequent chromosome numbers were 2n = 36 and 2n = 38. Different nuclear orientations, however, were observed in telophase II due to the variable positioning of the metaphase II plates. Laggards were also observed in both accessions. The mitotic behavior of Azolla pinnate 0072 at C-metaphase was observed. Due to the extreme smallness of the chromatids and poor spreading, chromosome number was also hard to determine. A wide variation of chromosome number, ranging from 2n = 36 to 2n = 86, was observed.
