Abstract

JOSEPH C. LIM. University of the Philippines at Los Banos. March, 1992. Systematics of Diatoms from Recent Core Sediments Along Laguna de Bay with Some Ecological Studies. Adviser: Dr. Milagrosa R. Martinez

A total of 31 species of diatoms were described from recent core sediments of two replicate sites along Laguna de Bay in Bagong Kalsada, Calamba, Laguna. They belong to 11 families, three of which belong to Order Centrales and eight belong to Order Pennales. Four species belong to Order Centrales while 27 belong to Order. Pennales. These include 14 new records of diatoms known along Laguna de Bay. Diagnostic descriptions, photographs or illustrations, and habitat records are given for each species or variety. A dichotomous key is presented. Diatom counts were made per gram of soil sample (dry weight) at the different depths. Diversity and dominance indices were computed along the depth profile. Centrales to Pennales ratio was also determined.
