M-phase in R. spathacea occurred at 10:00 A.M. The squashed root tips of R. spathacea stained with acetocarmine revealed the sequential stages of mitosis namely : prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Karyotypes of premetaphase and C-metaphase chromosomes of R. spathacea were determined. The diploid chromosome number (2n) was 12. Chromosomes were monocentric and classified into median ( arm ratios ranging from 1.05 to 1.73 ) and submedian groups ( arm ratios ranging from 1.78 to 2.86). Relative lengths of chromosomes ranged from 0.055 to 0.109. Mitotic index was 11.76%.
