Abstract

MENDOZA, LIEZEL N. University of the Philippines Los Banos. March 1997. Frequency Distribution, Inheritance Pattern and Plasma Protein Analysis Among Filipino Asthmatics in Batangas City.

A survey of records of a hospital and a health clinic of Batangas City was conducted to determine the prevalence and distribution of asthma. Among 205,581 Filipinos of Batangas City, a total of 1,583 (0.77%) were asthmatics. Pre-pubertal and pubertal males (below or equal 14 years) showed a higher frequency (52.9%) of asthma than pre-pubertal and pubertal females(47.1%). For the age group 14 years and above, there was a predominance of female over male. The frequency of consults was high in January and February. April and May but low in September to December. The observed pattern may be due to a change in temperature in January and February, increase in pollen and dust incidence in April and May and a decrease in pollen incidence due to heavy rainfall in September to December. A comparison of SDS-PAGE Electrophoresis protein band patterns of asthmatics and non-asthmatics showed a total of 40 bands with varying mobilities and frequencies. Significant differences in average Rf values were found for 22 of the 40 hands. Similarity Index (S) for plasma protein bands within and between asthmatics and non asthmatics was found to be 45% and 55%, respectively. The dissimilarity in protein band patterns between asthmatics and non-asthmatics suggests that biochemical changes could have arisen in asthmatic patiens. However, high index of similarity within asthmatics can be explaines by the same physiological changes occuring in every patient.
