Abstract
Seventeen isolated fungi were screened for their chitin: deacetylase activity using gas chromatography. Mucor rowcii (ATCC no 24905) was used as the reference fungus. Results showed that the top five fungal isolates in terms of activity were 44M, 106M, 55M, F33M 1 and 54M2WSF. Moreover, isolate 44M and Mucor roucii were found to have similar activities. The effect of using different chitinous substrates was evaluated among the top five fungal isolates. The two substrates used were partially purified chitin and colloidal chitin. Results showed that colloidal chitin is a better substrate than partially purified chitin. The effect of length of cultivation of fungal isolates was also compared. Statistical analyses showed that seven-day old fungal isolates have higher activities than ten-day old fungi.
