Abstract

MERCADO, CHARLES PERFECTO A., University of the Philippines at Los Banos, March 1986. Cytology of Philippine Marigolds : Tagetes erects Linn. and Tagetes patula Linn. (f. Compositae, o. Asteriales). Adviser : Dr. Liwayway M. Engle An analysis of chromosomal behavior in pollen mother cells of Tagetes erecta Linn. and Tagetes patula Linn. showed normal microsporogenesis. Hinor aberrations such as minimal observations on non-congression of chromosomes at metaphase I and laggards at anaphase I in T. erects were reported. Post-meiotic cytokinesis showed various configurations. The isobilateral 'N' type, the linear 'L' type and the slightly oblique 'S' type were observed. Chromosome counts at prophase I showed n 12 for T. erecta and n 24 for T. patula. Pollen fertility tests using 12KI stain showed that the pollen in both species were fertile- (an average of 95.0% on random field counts) and, therefore, functional.
