Abstract

Naces. Julieta L., College of Arts and Sciences. University of the Philippines at Los Banos. March 1989. EFFECT OF HORMONES ON THE PATTERN OF SPORANGIAL DEVELOPMENT AND MORPHOLOGY OF THE UPLB AZOLLA HYBRID 1.

Adviser: Dr. Pacifico C. Payawal

The effect of different concentrations of the hormones IAA and GA3 on sporangial development, fragmentatior root length, and number of roots of the UPLB Azolla hybrid I was determined using the "hormone-in-solution" and foliar spray methods under greenhouse and growth chamber conditions. Sex expression was significantly altered in Azolla plants treated with GA3 at 100 and 10 ppm using hormone in solution method and 0.001 ppm using foliar spray method while no effect was observed on IAA-treated plants. Specific concentrations of the two hormones were found to affect the fragmentation, and number of roots of the Azolla plants. No effect, however, was observed on root elongation. The method of application of the hormones was also observed to influence the effectivity of the hormones.
