Abstract

This study deals with the comparison of the clothing expenditures per capita between the male- and female-headed households and determines if the sex of a household head affects the clothing expenditures of the household. It also seeks to determine which socio- economic and demographic factors affect the clothing expenditures of the household. Using the 2012 Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) and employing the OLS and the Tobit regression analyses, the clothing expenditure of the two households (male- and female-headed households) is affected significantly by the sex of the household head as well as some of the socio-economic and demographic variables such as the educational level (from the vocational technical course and above), employment of the household head, number of employed family members, total expenditures per capita, and the location of the household. Moreover, results reveal that the sex of the household head had a negative and significant effect on the clothing expenditure of the household implying that the female-headed households have higher clothing expenditures than the male- headed households.
