Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the factors and reasons for the repayment performance of member-borrowers from selected multi-purpose cooperatives. The study characterized the respondents according to socio-demographic and economic factors, identified factors affecting the repayment performance, and the problems and issues the borrowers faced in repaying their loans.

A total of 120 member-borrowers (60 with high and 60 with low repayment performance) from three selected-multi-purpose cooperatives in Laguna were interviewed. The difference between characteristics of borrowers from the high and low performance groups were analyzed using independent samples t-test. Association between repayment performance and borrower’s characteristics was analyzed using Pearson’s chi-squared test.

The results of the t-test revealed that of the 14 variables tested, only the difference in loan amount was statistically significant between the two groups. The results of the chi- squared test revealed that all of the 23 variables tested using the Pearson’s chi-squared test had no statistically significant association with the repayment performance of the borrowers. Results also reveal that of seven commonly cited reasons for low or non- repayment, the category other reasons was the only factor found to have statistically significant association with member-borrowers’ repayment performances. Thus, for the 120 respondents from the selected multi-purpose cooperatives in Laguna at the time the study was conducted, commonly cited factors that affect repayment performance cited by previous studies were not associated their repayment performances.
