Abstract
The supply of purple yam (dioscorea alata) is decreasing from 2009 to 2018 by roughly 0.05 percent per year. Purple yam is a root-crop that takes 10 months to mature. For the last decade the volume and area harvested have both been decreasing. The general objective of the study is to analyze the profitability of purple yam production in San Pablo City to see if the industry is financially and physically capable of increasing the production of purple yam. Based on a sample of 39 purple yam farmers in San Pablo City in the province of Laguna, the study found out that purple yam farming in the said location is profitable earning Php 0.68 profit for every peso of revenue. The purple yam production’s profitability was influenced by the rate of complete and organic fertilizer applied and hired labor. However, the application of urea may not be a necessity given that complete and organic fertilizers and ammonium sulphate application is already being practiced. The sample farms recorded a mean yield of 2.64 tons/ha, which is lower than both the national yield of 5.59 tons/ha and regional yield of 6.55 tons/ha.
