Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the choice of markets for vegetables among households in three different public markets in Laguna: Bay, Batong Malake, and Calauan public markets. Specifically, it characterized and compared the buyers of vegetables in the different public markets; ascertained the attributes being considered by the buyers in looking for markets from which to buy vegetables; determined the factors that affect buyer’s selection of public market; and gave recommendations for the improvement of the public markets.
Systematic sampling was employed with a random start with the next respondent identified for every 5 households to the right of the previous household-respondent. A total of 170 respondents were interviewed using a pre-tested interview schedule. The analytical tools used in the study included descriptive analysis with the aid of pictures and tables showing frequencies, totals, averages, and percentages; multi-criteria analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis.
Results revealed that age, mode of transportation, environmental acceptability, social equity and acceptability, and economic equity and viability were found significant when Bay Public Market was paired with Batong Malake Public Market. On the other hand, when Bay Public Market was paired with Calauan Public Market, the significant variables were age and the three pillars of public market sustainability. It was concluded that Bay Public Market was the most preferred mainly because of its vegetable quality and affordability, strategic location, and enough parking space for the private vehicles despite having problems of presence of pickpockets and robbers, lack of parking space once a week and traffic congestion during tiangge on Friday. Also, age, mode of transportation, environmental acceptability, social equity and acceptability, and economic equity and viability were significant factors for public market choice. The following were recommended: strengthen the implementation of market ordinances on cleanliness of the market; installing price bulletin board and signages; supporting the renovation of the public market particularly in Calauan; provision of alternative route for vehicles especially in Batong Malake Public Market to minimize traffic congestion; tightening the security in the market premises; conduct of seminars and/or trainings for development and sustainability of the public markets, and conduct of further studies on the sustainability of public markets.
