Abstract

Understanding the factors affecting food access is important in addressing issues related to it. Since food access is an aspect of food security, identifying the components that influence access to food was considered to deal with the gaps to be able to achieve food security. This study aimed to assess the effect of social capital on food access in Dauis, Bohol. Moreover, the study characterized households using their socio-economic profile, measured the social capital of selected households in Dauis, Bohol in terms of the six dimensions of social capital, determined the relationship between social capital and the socio-economic characteristics of the selected households, compared how social capital affects food access in rural and urban areas, evaluated the implications of social capital to food access in Dauis, Bohol, and provided policy recommendations based on the findings of the study.

The household food decision-makers from selected barangays in Dauis, Bohol were interviewed to measure their social capital and access to food. The chosen rural and urban barangays were Biking and Songculan, respectively. There was a total of 96 respondents included in the study wherein 44 respondents came from Biking and 52 from Songculan. To describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, descriptive analysis was utilized through frequencies, percentages, averages, minimum, and maximum. A pre-tested survey instrument containing questions on social capital and food consumed by a household from the previous day was used to interview the respondents. There were six dimensions included in measuring the social capital which was adopted from the World Bank. On the other hand, the measurement for the food access was done through a food diversity score using the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) wherein a higher food score means higher food access. Furthermore, binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the variables that influence social capital while ordered logistic regression analysis was utilized to examine the factors affecting food access which includes social capital as an explanatory variable.

It was observed that most household food decision-makers were females, aged 40- 49 years old, have graduated from college, wage and salary workers, have an income level ranging from PhP1,500-10,000, and have a household size of four to six with at least one working household member. Results of the study found that 77 percent of the respondents were considered to have social capital based on the calculated social capital score. As for the food score, 57 percent of the total respondents had moderate food access while 25 percent and 18 percent were classified under high and low food access, respectively. In terms of the factors affecting social capital, only the occupation had a significant effect on the model. Meanwhile, the factors which have a significant effect on food access were income, classification of barangay, distance to market, education, and social capital. In consideration of the findings of the study, it was recommended that employment opportunities be made available to people to increase their income. Additionally, the promotion of urban agriculture can be done to improve access to food and stimulate social capital formation within the members of the community. The information and communication around the neighborhood can also be improved through the use of the internet.
