Abstract

The research examined the existing entrepreneurial orientation dimensions in the context of small-scale production-oriented Aster farm businesses, and their relationships to the business performance. The conceptual model of the study adopted the structure of Hughes and Morgan‟s (2007) study which followed the entrepreneurial orientation conceptualization of Lumpkin and Dess (1996). First, it was determined if and how the five (5) entrepreneurial orientation dimensions are manifested in this specific business context. The business performance was then measured objectively through calculating for its profitability, and also subjectively, which is based on the farmers‟ perception of the financial performance of the business. The profiling of the business and of the producers was done to develop a concrete justification of the obtained results.

This research aimed to add insights to the theory developments in the field of entrepreneurial orientation, specifically in the context of small-scale agricultural production level. This is one of the few empirical studies which examined the entrepreneurial orientation dimensions existing in a small-scale, non-food agricultural production environment. Furthermore, it analyzed the effects of these dimensions to the

business performance of the farms. This research have adapted and modified a Likert- type scale measurement for the five (5) EO dimensions and the business performance,

from different literature. The relationship among the dependent and independent variables was determined using Pearson‟s correlation. The results aimed to support the conceptualization of EO dimensions as independently existing variables in different business settings, and establish the association of entrepreneurially-oriented strategies to the success of a production-oriented venture.

The results showed that only four EO dimensions are significantly associated with the business performance in a production-oriented, conventional farming business setting: risk-taking, innovativeness, competitive aggressiveness, and autonomy. There is weak positive linear relationship for competitive aggressiveness, moderate positive linear relationship for risk-taking and innovativeness, and strong positive linear relationship for autonomy. Lastly, proactiveness was found not significantly associated with the business performance.
