Abstract

The effects of Vitex negundo crude hexane extract on some reproductive parameters were evaluated in the laboratory using albino rats.

Pregnant albino rats were given daily doses of the crude extract (i. e., at varying doses from 125 - 500mg/kg bw) from day 6 - 15 of gestation. The test material was administered to the animals at a constant volume of 10 ml/kg by stomach intubation.

The material was found to exert influence on early implantation, and caused significant early fetal resorption. SignIficant effect was also detected on the mean body weights, and this was detectable during the last stages of urganogenesis. Weights of the liver and ovaries were also affected; no apparent effect was found on adrenal weights, however. Analysis of fetal skeleton revealed some mild malformations; these were observed on ribs and sternum of pups from treated mothers. Soft tissue evaluation, however, showed no apparent anomalies on the different organs studied.
