Abstract

Chromosome number, morphology, and behavior in mitosis and meiosis in H. pubicalyx Merr. with silver specks on leaves and red flowers (variant I) and in mitosis in H. pubicalyx Merr. with plain leaves and with maroon flowers (variant 2) were investigated. Variant I showed II chromosome pairs at diakinesis (2n = 22). Meristematic cells observed from the root tips of the two variants exhibited normal mitotic activity. Mitotic index was slightly higher in variant 2 (3.85%) as compared to variant 1 (3.5%). Karyotypes of the prometaphase cells revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 22 in both Hoyas. The chromosomes were small, with relative lengths ranging from 0.46 to 1.00 in variant I and 0.44 to 1.00 in variant 2. Chromosome type determination revealed that all chromosomes in both variants were metacentric except for chromosome number 5 in variant 1, which was submetacentric. 01 the 11 pairs of chromosomes, 90.91% exhibited similar centromere position.
