RODRIGUEZ, JAE JOSEPH RUSSELL B., University of the Philippines, Los Banos, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Major in Genetics, April 2007. GENETIC DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT OF POPULATIONS OF BEEF CATTLE, Bos indicus L. (Artiodactyla: Bovidae), IN ILOCOS NORTE AND SIX LOCALITIES IN MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES BASED ON PROTEIN POLYMORPHISM

Genetic diversity based on biochemical polymorphism was assessed in beef cattle (Bos indicus) populations of llocos Norte and six localities of Mindanao. Starch gel eletcrophoresis was done on 189 plasma samples. Nine presumptive loci were observed. Alb is monomorphic. Trf has six genotypes (AA, AB, AC, BB. BC and CC). Est has three (Est AA, Est AB and Est BB) while Acph1 and Acph2 loci both show AA, AB. BB types. Mdh1 and Mdh2 loci both exhibit AA. AB and BB genotypes. Pearson's chi-square test revealed that Bukidnon, Camiguin, Iligan, Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental populations are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for the Acph1 locus. In the Acph2 locus. Iligan, South Cotabato and Zamboanga del Sur populations follow equilibrium frequencies. Intrapopulation genetic diversity based on proportion of polymorphic loci (P) is highest in Bukidnon. Camiguin, Iligan. Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental at 0.8889, and !locos Norte populations at 0.5556 Average heterozygosity (H) is highest in Camiguin at 0.4378 and lowest in (locos Norte at 0.2483. Bukidnon, Camiguin, Zamboanga del Sur, and Misamis Occidental have an average of 2 alleles per locus (A); (locos Norte, Iligan and South Cotabato have an A value of 1.8889. With 0.9765 and 0.0237 values for genetic identity(IN) and genetic distance (D) respectively. Bukidnon and Camiguin populations are most related. !locos Norte and Zamboanga are most distant at IN=0 7880 and D=0 2383 Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental were most related with each other at genotypic identity (I) = 0 8785 while !locos Norte and Camiguin are most diversified at 1=0.5420. Mindanao populations are clustered while !locos Norte is the outgroup.
