Abstract
The incidence of hemoglobin variants and their phenotypic conditions were examined in hemolysates of one hundred fifty donors to the Philippine National Red Cross and three hundred twenty-four students of U. P. at Los Banos using starch-gel electrophoresis at pH 8.6. All the one hundred fifty donors had normal hemoglobin, Hb A. In the student population, two heterozygotes for Hb E and one heterozygote for a still unidentified hemoglobin variant, Hb X, were observed. The normal hemoglobin Kb A allele and the variant Hb E allele had a frequency of .09691 and .00309, respectively. Hb X was a fast moving hemoglobin than Lb Although it clearly resembles the established electrophoretic mobility of Hb j, necessary controls are required to arrive at a conclusive statement.
