Abstract
The study entitled ―A Case Study on Lighthouse Cooperative-Ybanag Food Products in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan‖ was conducted to assess the status and perfomance of Lighthouse Cooperative through its business unit, Ybanag Food Products. This research investigated the cooperative and Ybanag Food Products’ business functions and the factors in the environment that affected the performance of the cooperative. Furthermore, it aimed to identify the strategic issue that has organization-wide implications. More specifically, the paper intended to: (1) present the profile and current status of the Lighthouse Cooperative Tuguegarao and Ybanag Food Products, (2) evaluate the external and internal environment prevailing at the particular time of the case, (3) determine the problems, issues, and concerns of Lighthouse Cooperative-Ybanag Food Products; and (4) generate alternative options to the identified problems; and recommend strategies to improve the performance of Lighthouse Cooperative-Ybanag Food Products.
The Lighthouse Cooperative- Ybanag Food Products currently offers Chicharabao, Chicharica, Carabeef Tapa, Pork Longganisa, Banana King Banana Chips, and Peanut products as main products. This study highlighted the top sellers and income generators of the cooperative which are Chicharabao and Chicharica. Local tourists and other customers directly buy the product from the two cooperative retail outlets.Marketing was potentially the strongest functional area of the cooperative since it has a competitive edge specifically its branding strategy. They were able to build a strong brand reputation for their main products and that have become household names in the pasalubong industry. However, Lighthouse Cooperative- Ybanag Food Products still needs to improve their marketing strategy on other products lines.
For the production aspect, the overall operations of the cooperative were satisfactory. However, problems that could affect the entire performance of the cooperative and Ybanag Food Products includes low supply of raw materials and the technology available in the production site. These cause overlap of workflow and hinder cooperative from acquisition of Halal and HACCP certifications which hindered further expansion of their operations. With respect to the human resource management, the cooperative violated one of the cooperative principles that is the ―Voluntary and Open Ownership‖. The exclusivity of its membership to Victory Christian Fellowship violated this principle and in addition, limited the growth and expansion of the cooperative membership. Overall, the current strategies taken by the cooperative to promote the welfare of its members are effective. However the cooperative should consider amending its by-laws because of the impending issues stated above.
In addition, the financial health of Lighthouse Cooperative and Ybanag Food Products is satisfactory. The study did not tackle other business units other than Ybanag Food Products but the cooperative evaluate review their other business units.
Based on the problem tree analysis, results showed that the most prevalent strategic issue of the cooperative and Ybanag Food Products was the limited supply of raw materials like the supply of carabao hide. Thus strategies on backward integration, geographic expansion and/ or relocation of operations, acquisition of cold storage and preservation facilities, and product development are recommended. Other complementary recommendations on improving marketing, human resource, operations and finance aspects of Lighthouse Cooperative and Ybanag Food Products are suggested.
