Abstract

This study aims to analyze the statements, actions, and character exhibited by President Rodrigo Duterte towards international critics of his war on drugs. This thesis argues that the diplomacy practiced by Duterte on his first year as the President is problematic using the presented interpretations of Niccolo Machiavelli’s theories on international relations, along with the attributes and actions attached to the Prince. Therefore, Duterte must not only practice the brutish character of the prince, he also has to exercise the calculative nature of the prince in order to take and maintain power of the state.
