Abstract

This assessment of the agribusiness investments and development potential of the thirty-hectare farm aimed to: (1) describe the thirty-hectare farm in terms of its management practices, agricultural resources and land characteristics; (2) present a comprehensive analysis of the physical resources, economic profile and agricultural sector situation of the province of Iloilo and municipality of Bingawan; (3) assess possible agricultural production investment opportunities or entry points in the municipality of Bingawan, Iloilo; (4) recommend a practical and viable agribusiness development strategy for the thirty-hectare land.

A three-step assessment was conducted in the identification of potential agribusiness investments and development. The first step was assessing the different market opportunities of the commodities that were produced in the province of Iloilo. After, it was followed by the assessment of the land characteristics and the technical requirements of the commodities that were shortlisted from the first step. Lastly, the third step was assessment of the owner’s future plans.

Overall, there were 31 commodities that were identified by the Municipal Agriculture Offices in the Province of Iloilo. Out of the 31, only 25 crops were shortlisted to have potential markets. From the 25 commodities, only 18 were suitable to be planted in the area. These commodities include palay, banana, coffee, coconut, cassava, cacao, peanut, tomato, eggplant, mango, Calamansi, papaya, Mangosteen, Pomelo, Gabi, avocado, Lanzones and pineapple.

These commodities were clustered together and were intercropped to maximize the land use of the farm. Aside from the marketability, technical suitability and the profitability of the shortlisted commodity, the climatic factor of the area was also considered.
