Abstract
It was in the late 80’s until the early 90’s when piles of white and yellow corn were typically seen along the Malvar Highway in Batangas. Jeeps and trucks used to line up the streets as they load the sacks of corn, while carabao - drawn carriage loaded with stacks of corn sacks passed along the road, as small stalls abounded on the pathways where the farmer’s family sold raw and cooked corn. It is a setting that was vividly recalled by longtime residents of this town, which unfortunately, no longer prevails nowadays.
Compared to other corn producing countries like China, Philippines has only a marginal percentage output on the said product. Although, the country aims to be self-sufficient on both types of corn to be able to access the export market, currently , due to the increasing demand in the Feed Milling Industry, the yellow corn which is one of the essential and most common feed ingredients, has then become the focal point on the implementation of an improved corn development program by the government. Studies on how to improve the nominal demand for corn as human food is still in process, in order to draw level with the demand of yellow corn in the Feed Milling Industry. Today, the corn is considered as the second most important crop after rice and it is seen as a potential alternative to rice. Different studies are being conducted on how the market will accept the new innovations on corn products as well as help farmers improve their corn production.
This research is done to study the production and marketing of corn which is the basic input of multiple demand on products locally and internationally, particularly the Japanese corn and white corn of Malvar, Batangas , a place suitable for corn production based on its environmental condition and soil content.
An analytical framework was used in this study to serve as guide in analyzing the production and marketing practices of farmers in Malvar, Batangas. This research was done with the aid of various literature ,reading materials, studies by the local government and private institutions. Furthermore, personal interviews among local farmers was also conducted to analyze the quality of production and marketing of corn in Malvar. Interviews were done to identify factors concerning socio-demographic profile of the farmers and the farm characteristics affecting corn. Moreover, with the technological knowledge and advance equipment today and availability of the workforce the current practices were described and assessed. In the marketing aspect, the mode of payment, marketing channels, pricing decision and promotion strategy were considered as factors that could affect marketing, The simple cost and return computation is done to identify how the farmers allocate the money and how it differs on the average cost and return nationwide. Upon the consideration of all the factors and tools used, a diagram has been drawn to show the result.
Furthermore, six (6) issues in production and marketing resulted to farmers inability to obtain accurate profit . Firstly, products were sold at lower prices, followed by the negative effects of the aging population of farmers, the restricted credit system, limited market, pests, diseases, and lastly ,the volatile market price. After considering all issues, a recommendation was given to aid the possible entrants, government programs as well as the future research that could help in developing corn in the human food industry. It is recommended to encourage farmers to adapt product and market development strategy, lessen the application of fertilizer, to use new technology in planting. Moreover, for the private and public institutions to provide continuous support especially when the farmer decide to pursue the suggested strategies.
